India averted deaths of 1 mn under-5 children: Journal

NEW DELHI:  Days after the government announced a decline in Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) to 34 per 1,000 live births in 2016 from 37 per 1,000 live births in 2015, scientific journal Lancet on Tuesday in a study supported it, though it said India has avoided about 1 million deaths of children under the age of five since 2005.

Govt to seal sugar mill for Beas fish deaths

Tribune News Service Chandigarh/gurdaspur, May 18 Environment Minister OP Soni on Friday ordered the sealing of the sugar mill, located at Kiri Afghana in Gurdaspur, from where molasses spilled into the Beas and caused the death of hundreds of fish. He also ordered seizure of security deposit worth Rs 25 lakh of the mill, belonging to Chadha Sugars and Industries Pvt Ltd. The minister constituted a probe committee and sought a report within three days and warned of strict action if the mill management is found guilty. Mill’s location raises eyebrows The incident has raised a question mark over the mill’s location. Chadha Sugars and Industries is owed by the family of deceased liquor baron Ponty Chadha. Custodial deaths: Relief disparity under HC lens

Saurabh Malik Tribune News Service Chandigarh, March 12 All jail inmates are equal, but some are more equal than others in Punjab and Haryana when it comes to payment of compensation in case of unnatural or custodial deaths. The anomaly surfaced before the Punjab and Haryana High Court during the hearing of a “court on its own motion” or suo motu case on unnatural deaths. Taking cognisance of inconsistencies in payment, a Division Bench of the High Court has called for details of the compensation paid, the cause of death and the reasons for paying different amounts. The suo motu proceedings against the Union of India and other respondents by the High Court have its genesis in a Supreme Court judgment rendered in the case of “Re-inhuman Conditions in 1,382 Prisons”. ...
