PSEB Class X: 50 schools draw blank

Tribune News Service Chandigarh, May 16 There was not even a single student in over 50 government schools who could pass the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) Class X examinations, the result of which was declared recently. Taking a serious note of the poor performance, the Education Department on Wednesday decided to summon heads of 374 government schools, which had a pass percentage of less than 25 per cent. Yet, despite the deaths of Indian workers in Iraq, thousands of men in Punjab still hope to find a job in the war-torn land – and mostly through illegal channels. Of the 39 labourers who went to Iraq and were killed by suspected ISIS militants, 27 were from Punjab. Travel agents here said people still plan to go to places such as Iraq for jobs and better wages, despite the risks that such troubled regions pose. Draw of lots for liquor vends on March 26

Tribune News Service Moga, March 18 The state government has invited applications by March 23 for allotment of retail sale licences of Punjab medium liquor and Indian-made foreign liquor for the next financial year. A draw of lots will be held on March 26 at all district headquarters and the entire process would be video-graphed, said an excise department official. Those interested in retail liquor business can get application forms from the office of Assistant Excise and Taxation Commissioners (AETC) at district headquarters from March 19 onwards. The application fee is Rs 18,000 for each unit/zone.
