Punjab CM writes neighbouring states for cooperation in fight against drugs

CHANDIGARH: Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh has sought the cooperation of his counterparts in Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan, as well as the Union Home Minister to whom the Delhi Police reports, in controlling the cultivation and smuggling of narcotics and also ensuring that no safe havens are allowed to drug peddlers and smugglers in their respective regions.

SAD offers to help govt fight menace

Chandigarh, July 6 The Shiromani Akali Dal has offered “wholehearted constructive support” to the government in fighting the drug menace. In the party’s core committee meeting held here on Friday evening, party members hailed the stand of the party president Sukhbir Singh Badal that the fight against drugs must be fought by rising above petty vested political interests or divisions. The core committee meeting was chaired by Sukhbir Badal, while party chief patron Parkash Singh Badal was not present. The committee members regretted that the attitude of the ruling party and some other political outfits had ruined the image of the Punjab youth outside the state, making it difficult for them to pursue their professional or academic careers outside the state. — TNS The Tribune

To fight drugs, Punjab wants death for dealers

Rajmeet Singh Tribune News Service  Chandigarh, July 2 Jolted by the public outcry over a spate of drug overdose deaths in the state, the Punjab Cabinet, that met under Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh on Monday, decided to recommend to the Union Government death penalty for drug peddlers at the first instance.  This provision already exists in the NDPS Act for those held guilty for the second time.
