Parvesh Sharma Tribune News Service Sangrur, June 21 With farmers reluctant to go in for direct sowing of rice (DSR), which guzzles 30 per cent less water, crisis stares Sangrur in the face, with the groundwater depleting by the day. Out of the total 2.83 lakh hectares under paddy cultivation, the DSR was done on 1,800 hectares this year. Sources said last year, the area in the district under the DSR was 600 hectares and despite efforts of the Agriculture Department and the Sangrur administration, only 1,200 hectares has increased this year. The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today condemned the attack on Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) legislator Amarjit Singh Sandoa when he visited a village in Nurpur Bedi area, but demanded a judicial inquiry to understand the reason for the attack as videographic evidence from the site revealed that the attackers were AAP supporters who were protesting against forced extortions from the AAP legislator.

Of the eight car occupants, only a three-year-old child survived, who got serious injuries and was hospitalised here. Most of the deceased were residents of Delhi and were returning from a shrine in Himachal Pradesh.   The deceased have been identified as Arvind Sharma, Sawita Sharma, Mani Sharma and Shewash Sharma, all residents of Utam Nagar in New Delhi. Tribune News Service Amritsar, June 18 Seven persons were killed as an SUV they were travelling in rammed into a truck parked outside a dhaba at Khalchian village on the NH-1, near here, on Monday. Of the eight SUV occupants, only a five-year-old girl survived. She, however, sustained severe injuries. The deceased have been identified as Arvind Sharma (36), his wife Savita Sharma (32), daughter Bhavya Sharma (14) and son Seevash Sharma (11), all residents of Uttam Nagar in Delhi, and Sunil (31), his wife Poonam (29) and son Viraj (3) of Jhajjar (Haryana).
