To curb quota misuse in panchayat polls, govt to amend rules

Rajmeet Singh Tribune News Service Chandigarh, June 19 To eliminate chances of any manipulation in deciding the reservation of panchayats for women and Scheduled Castes (SCs), the forthcoming panchayat elections will be held on the basis of district-wise population data. To do the same, the state government is bringing an amendment to the rules under the Punjab Panchayati Raj Act. A favourable opinion has already been sought from the Legal Remembrancer (LR), it is learnt. Rural polls through EVMs gigantic task, SEC tells court

Tribune News Service Chandigarh, June 1 The State Election Commission on Friday told the Punjab and Haryana High Court that the task for conducting gram panchayat elections through electronic voting machines (EVMs) instead of paper ballot was gigantic, but the issue is under active consideration. In an affidavit filed before the court, the commission’s secretary contended that there were about 13,200 gram panchayats in the state, for which approximately 1.27 lakh EVMs would be required, if elections are to be held on a single day. The situation was different in the last municipal corporation elections as the requirement was only 12,000 EVMs as the elections were held in phases, the affidavit added. Tribune News ServiceJalandhar, May 29A day after the Shahkot bypoll, former Mehatpur SHO Inspector Parminder Bajwa, who had got an FIR registered against Congress candidate Hardev Singh Laddi Sherowalia, got bail from the district courts here on Tuesday.Bajwa was arrested on May 11 when he had entered the courtroom of District and Sessions Judge SK Garg for carrying his weapon. He was booked under the Arms Act, besides Sections 353 and 186 of the IPC for allegedly obstructing the court security staff from discharging their duties.His wife Simarjot Bajwa appeared in the court on Tuesday and furnished a surety of Rs 50,000.His lawyer had contended before the court that they wanted Bajwa’s treatment to be undertaken at a good hospital.
