To do the same, the state government is bringing an amendment to the rules under the Punjab Panchayati Raj Act. Tribune News Service Chandigarh, June 1 The State Election Commission on Friday told the Punjab and Haryana High Court that the task for conducting gram panchayat elections through electronic voting machines (EVMs) instead of paper ballot was gigantic, but the issue is under active consideration. In an affidavit filed before the court, the commission’s secretary contended that there were about 13,200 gram panchayats in the state, for which approximately 1.27 lakh EVMs would be required, if elections are to be held on a single day. The situation was different in the last municipal corporation elections as the requirement was only 12,000 EVMs as the elections were held in phases, the affidavit added.
