‘Crop insurance scheme benefits companies more than farmers’

New Delhi: It is yet to be seen how much the Modi government's ambitious crop insurance scheme has benefitted farmers, but one section that has definitely hit the jackpot is the insurance industry, which collectively earned around 85 per cent profit, excluding expenditure on administrative purposes and reinsurance, during the 2017-18 kharif season, government data shows.

Tribune News Service Mohali, July 5 State Food and Supplies Minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu and senior Congress leader Sunil Jakhar launched the statewide distribution of food grain under the Smart Ration Card Scheme through electronic Point of Sale (e-PoS) machines during a state-level function at Kisan Vikas Chamber here on Thursday. Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh was scheduled to launch the scheme but he failed to reach the function “due to some unavoidable circumstances”. Both leaders along with Cabinet minister Balbir Singh Sidhu and Power Minister Gurpreet Singh Kangar also distributed cheques for enhanced honorarium to various fair price shop (FPS) owners.
