Under Rs 3-lakh debt, farmer kills himself

Bathinda, May 18 A 28-year-old farmer from Bhukhianwali village committed suicide after consuming a poisonous substance on Thursday. The deceased, Harbans Singh, was reeling under a debt. Balkaran Singh, cousin of the deceased, said, “Harbans and his brother had taken a loan of Rs 6 lakh against their agricultural land three years ago. Harbans’ father had a chronic kidney disease and a lot of money had gone into his treatment. Later, a huge amount of money was spent on the marriage of his sister. For the past four months, Harbans had started alienating himself.” — TNS The Tribune

Area under cotton crop may shrink

Perneet Singh Tribune News Service Bathinda, May 16 With the cotton crop not fetching good prices in the season gone by and the farmers not getting timely canal water supply in the sowing season, there are reports that the area under cotton cultivation in Malwa belt may witness a decline this year. Talking to The Tribune, former North India Cotton Association president Ashok Kapur admitted that the trend was weak right now and there was nothing to suggest that the area under cotton cultivation would increase. He said the cotton prices in the previous season touched Rs 5,200 to Rs 5,300 per quintal, which the farmers didn’t find remunerative.
